India has surpassed Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, according to NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, who cited data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Speaking at a press conference during the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting on ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat 2047’, Subrahmanyam announced that India’s economy has reached the USD 4 trillion milestone.
“We are the fourth-largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy, and this is not my data — this is IMF data. India today is larger than Japan. Only the United States, China, and Germany are ahead of us,” he said. He further expressed optimism that India could become the third-largest economy in the next two to three years if current policies and growth plans are effectively implemented.
According to the IMF’s April edition of the World Economic Outlook, India’s nominal GDP for fiscal year 2026 is projected at approximately USD 4,187.02 billion, slightly ahead of Japan’s estimated GDP of USD 4,186.43 billion. This economic milestone marks a significant step in India’s journey toward becoming a global economic powerhouse.
