Supreme Court Orders Expert Opinion Regarding Candidate with 88% Muscular Dystrophy’s Admission to MBBS

Date:

As per the GOI gazette (March 2024) on assessing specific disabilities, the Supreme Court noted today (Friday) during hearing a plea from a medical candidate with muscular dystrophy that there are no specific rules to assess disability with assistive equipment.

A candidate with 88% muscular dystrophy was heard by the bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The candidate was denied the opportunity to pursue MBBS on the grounds that the NMC Guidelines required the petitioner’s condition to be reduced to less than 80% in order for the candidate to be eligible.
